Basics Of Front Yard Landscaping PDF Print E-mail
by EmmaRichardson

The front yard is the first thing that most people see, so this tends to receive the most focus. There are many different ways to style the front yard. Even more are the countless landscaping ideas mulling around the minds of homeowners. In this short article you will find some basic landscaping concepts for your front yard.

Building Materials

Bricks remain the ideal kind of building material for front yard landscaping. They can be used in a variety of ways to shape the front yard like adding height, creating paths, introducing borders or edges and delineating an open area for relaxing in the afternoon. In addition, bricks come quite inexpensive and are easy to use without much labor or professional help.

In some situations, concrete may be more suitable. Although it is generally less desirable than bricks, it is often better for people who are in wheelchairs or serve drink or food on a trolley. Although concrete may need repair every couple of years, it is very useful in making patios.

Front Yard Landscaping For Desert Climates

Climates that are hot and arid often limit a person's front yard landscaping designs. Therefore, it is important to adopt a practical approach and use plants and soil that can remain healthy, even under the barren conditions. Ideally, you will want to choose plants that do not require a large supply of water to survive. Longwood Blue Bluebeard, Purple Sage and Oleander are some of the more popular desert plants that will thrive in desert conditions and look excellent in front yards.

Driveways

Landscaping driveways are an important feature as they lead people inside the home. There are lots of landscaping ideas for your driveway. It is better to plant some firm trees rather than small plants, especially if you have children playing in the driveway. If your budget allows you may think of gating off the driveway. This will make it more secure and will make it more attractive. If you have small animals, consider building a small wall to prevent them from spoiling your landscaping efforts.

Footpaths Shrubs And Solar Lights

Ideally, the footpath which leads from the driveway to the front door should be made of stones or bricks. This will help to give the place a more attractive look. As well, you will want to add flowers and lush plants along the edges of the footpath. You will also want to use small stones, versus large ones. Granite, pumice and limestone are amongst the more popular stones used in footpaths and delineating gardens.

The beauty of front yard landscaping heavily depends on the use of shrubs. They give a fresh and soft look to the place and also define the boundaries of the yard, thus providing some privacy. Solar lights look decorative and light the place during the evening. They are cost-effective and look great in front yards.
